Rome is one of those cities where where you stay can completely shape your experience. Some neighborhoods put you steps away from iconic landmarks like the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon, while others offer quieter streets, incredible local restaurants, or easy access to public transportation.
After several trips to Rome (including stays near the Trevi Fountain and Roma Termini) I’ve learned that there’s no single “best” neighborhood. It all depends on your travel style and budget.
This guide breaks down the best areas to stay in Rome, along with hotel recommendations I’ve personally stayed at or thoroughly researched, so you can book with confidence.

Best Neighborhoods: Where to Stay in Rome
With its rich history, vibrant street life, and distinct neighborhoods, Rome offers something for every traveler. Whether you’re a first-time visitor, a foodie, a history buff, or someone looking to experience authentic Roman life.
Here’s a breakdown of the top neighborhoods in Rome and what makes each one unique.
Centro Storico (Historic Center)
Best for: First-time visitors, sightseers, and those who want to be in the heart of it all
If it’s your first time in Rome, you’ll likely want to be near the major landmarks. Centro Storico is home to the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain, and charming cobblestone streets lined with gelaterias and trattorias.
You can walk to all the major attractions while historic architecture surrounds you. If you stay in this area, keep in mind it will be crowded and you’ll want to avoid the higher priced restaurants.

Hotel Recommendations for Centro Storico
- Budget: Hosianum Palace – A no frill room to be in this area without paying out of budget.
- Hostel: YellowSquare – My friends stayed here and we met up at the bar – it’s so fun here!
- Mid-range: Palazzo Olivia – Highly rated and books up quick!
- Splurge: Antico Albergo del Sole al Pantheon – central location, and the building is from 1467. Former guests include Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir.

Trastevere
Best for: Foodies, nightlife lovers, and those who want a charming, local vibe
Trastevere is one of Rome’s most beloved neighborhoods, with narrow streets, ivy-covered buildings, and a buzzing nightlife scene. It’s slightly off the beaten tourist path, but still walkable to central sights. If your perfect evening involves wandering narrow streets before settling into a lively piazza with a plate of cacio e pepe and a glass of wine, Trastevere is the neighborhood for you.
This area feels more local than the historic center while still being close enough to walk to many major attractions. During the day it’s relaxed and charming, but at night the streets come alive with restaurants, bars, and live music.
It’s one of my favorite neighborhoods to spend an evening in.

- Can be noisy at night

My Hotel Recommendations for Trastevere
- Budget: Hotel Trastevere – Under $200 a night
- Mid-range: Grand Hotel Gianicolo – Views of the Vatican and St. Peter’s Cathedral from its roof terrace AND there’s a pool.
- Splurge: Trastevere Suites – Beautiful amenities and central locations.
Esquilino / Termini Area
Best for: Budget travelers and convenience
Near Rome’s main train station, Termini, this area is ideal for those on a tight budget or needing easy airport access. It’s not the prettiest area, but it’s practical. Roma Termini is the main underground station in Rome that can bring you to the airport as well as around the city.
While it doesn’t have the same charm as Centro Storico or Trastevere, it offers some of the city’s best hotel prices and unbeatable transportation connections.
I’ve stayed here before an early train departure and found it incredibly convenient. If you’re planning several day trips or have an early flight, staying near Roma Termini can make your travel days much easier.

Hotel recommendations
- Budget: Roman Residence – An easy walk from Roma Termini, perfect if you have an early morning train or flight.
- Mid-range: Hotel Varese – on the cusp of also being a budget-friendly option. I stayed here for a night in October, as I needed easy access to Roma Termini.
- Splurge: Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome Hotel – A leading hotel of the world, you’ll be entranced the minute you step into the marble lobby.
Which Rome Neighborhood Should You Choose?
If you’re still deciding, here’s my recommendation based on your travel style:
First-time visitors: Centro Storico
You’ll spend less time commuting and more time exploring Rome’s iconic landmarks.
Couples: Centro Storico or Trastevere
Centro Storico is perfect for romantic evening walks past illuminated landmarks, while Trastevere offers cozy restaurants and a lively atmosphere.
Food lovers: Trastevere
Some of my favorite meals in Rome have been in Trastevere. It’s one of the city’s best neighborhoods for authentic Roman cuisine.
Budget travelers: Esquilino / Termini
You’ll often find significantly better hotel prices while maintaining excellent transportation access.
Luxury travelers: Centro Storico
Many of Rome’s most elegant hotels are located in the historic center, putting you close to the city’s most famous attractions.
Tips for Booking Hotels in Rome
- Book several months in advance if you’re traveling between April and October.
- Many historic hotels occupy centuries-old buildings, so don’t assume every property has an elevator.
- Rome charges a tourist tax that’s typically paid at check-in.
- If walking everywhere is important to you, prioritize location over hotel size.
- If you’re planning multiple day trips, staying near Roma Termini can save a lot of travel time.
Final Thoughts
Every neighborhood in Rome offers something different, and there really isn’t a wrong choice.
For most first-time visitors, I’d recommend staying in Centro Storico because you’ll be surrounded by the city’s most iconic sights and can experience Rome almost entirely on foot.
If food and nightlife are your priorities, Trastevere is hard to beat. And if you’re traveling on a budget or need easy train access, Esquilino/Termini is a practical and affordable option.
No matter where you stay, one thing is certain: Rome has a way of drawing you back. It certainly did for me.
