Getting to Lichtenstein Castle
One reason it took me so long to visit Lichtenstein Castle is that it’s much easier to access by car. However, there are ways to get there by public transportation!
By Train or Bus:
There’s no train station directly at Lichtenstein Castle, but you can get to the nearby town of Reutlingen via the Deutsche Bahn. From Reutlingen, take a bus or taxi to Honau, then walk up to the castle (~20 minutes uphill)
Train times to Reutlingen from major German cities:
- From Berlin: ~6.5-7.5 hours
- From Munich: ~2.5 hours
- From Frankfurt am Main: ~2.5 hours
I like to book my tickets on trainline, but when in Germany I’d also look into Deutsche Bahn for deals too.
By Car:
Traveling by car is the easiest and most efficient way to visit. The road up is winding and scenic — take your time and enjoy the views of the Swabian countryside.

- From Munich: ~2.5 hours
- From Frankfurt am Main: ~2.5 hours
- From Heidelberg: ~1.5 hours
Parking near the castle costs €2 per day, cash only. From the parking lot, it’s just a three-minute walk to the castle grounds. If you prefer free parking, you can park at the Aufberg hiking car park and walk 10–20 minutes uphill. The parking was extremely easy and the nearby parking lot wasn’t full.
Pro tip: Visiting by car makes it easier to combine Lichtenstein Castle with nearby viewpoints or other regional attractions. We visited the castle on our trip to Munich during Oktoberfest.
History of Lichtenstein Castle
While it may look medieval, Lichtenstein Castle is actually a 19th-century romantic reconstruction.
The original fortress foundation dates back to 1390. In 1820, a hunting lodge was built on the site. Then in 1837, the neo-Gothic castle we see today was constructed.
What inspired it?
The 1826 novel Lichtenstein by Wilhelm Hauff romanticized medieval Swabian history and directly influenced the castle’s design. It’s one of the rare cases where a novel directly inspired the construction of a real castle.
It’s also believed that Ludwig II of Bavaria drew inspiration from castles like Lichtenstein when later building Neuschwanstein Castle. While Neuschwanstein is far larger and more elaborate, the whimsical fairytale style is similar.
What to Expect When Visiting Lichtenstein Castle in Germany
Lichtenstein Castle is smaller than many major German castles, which actually makes it more intimate and manageable.
We spent about one hour exploring the grounds. If you take the interior tour, you may want to budget 1.5–2 hours total.

- Panoramic views over the Echaz Valley
- A compact courtyard
- Classic neo-Gothic towers and turrets
- Incredible photo opportunities
Because it’s smaller, this is an ideal half-day trip rather than a full-day excursion. When we visited, a school trip was wrapping up a tour but other than that, there were hardly any other people around. It felt very calm, unlike when visiting somewhere like Neuschwanstein.
Lichtenstein Castle Opening Hours
The castle closes entirely in January and February.
Typical hours (subject to change):

- April–October: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
- November–December: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
The final tour begins 30 minutes before closing.

Compared to other castles in Germany, admission is very reasonable.

We opted for grounds-only access. In hindsight, I’m still curious about the interior — especially since the rooms contain period furnishings and historic artifacts.
Important:
- Dogs are allowed on tours if carried the entire time.
- Interior tours are conducted in German.
- English tours are only available for private groups of 15+ with advance booking.

There are two convenient options right near the castle grounds:
- Schloss-Schenke – A casual beer garden offering traditional German snacks, coffee, and seasonal dishes.
- Altes Forsthaus – A restaurant and café with views over the Echaz Valley, especially lovely in summer.
Both make a perfect stop before or after your visit.
