Best Things to Do in Hilton Head
As someone who’s always on the go in daily life, I like to relax when I’m near the beach. For those who want a bit of adventure mixed in with rest, Hilton Head Island has it all!
Spend a Day at The Beach
I can’t lie to you, this is how I spent the majority of my time. No trip to Hilton Head Island is complete without spending time on the island’s beautiful beaches. The wide sandy shoreline, calm waves, and family-friendly atmosphere make it easy to relax for an entire day.
Bring a beach chair, enjoy a morning walk along the water, or simply spend the afternoon soaking up the sun. Most of my mornings started with a walk along the beach and coffee in hand. The beaches felt noticeably less crowded than many other East Coast destinations I’ve visited. Don’t forget to wear sunscreen!
Visit Harbour Town
Harbour Town is one of Hilton Head’s most recognizable attractions and home to the iconic red-and-white Harbour Town Lighthouse. Beyond the lighthouse, visitors can stroll the marina, browse local shops, enjoy waterfront dining, and watch boats come and go throughout the day. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon and one of the most photographed spots on the island.
On my first ever visit to Hilton Head Island, we ate lunch at X. Between the views and the high-quality food, it was an idyllic lunch spot.
Explore the Island by Bike
One of the things that makes Hilton Head unique is its extensive network of bike paths. Renting bikes is one of the best ways to explore the island while avoiding traffic and enjoying the scenery.
You’ll find trails connecting beaches, restaurants, parks, and neighborhoods, making it easy to get around while enjoying the outdoors.
Spend Time on the Water
One of the best ways to experience Hilton Head is from the water. Whether you’re looking for family-friendly activities, wildlife encounters, or a relaxing afternoon sail, there are plenty of excursions available around the island. Here’s what I’d recommend:
- Pirate Cruise on the Black Sparrow – this would be great if you’re on the Island with kids!
- 2-Hour Kayak Tour – if you’re lucky, you’ll spot dolphins!
- An afternoon sail – Relax on a sailboat!
- Dolphin boat watching tour – reasonably priced option to get out on a boat and spot dolphins.
Watch the Sunset on the Water
Hilton Head’s waterfront views are some of the best on the East Coast. Watching the sunset over Skull Creek was one of the highlights of my trip. The combination of boats, marsh views, and golden evening light creates the perfect Lowcountry experience.
There are plenty of restaurants on the water to choose from, or you can even take a sunset dinner cruise. Book this in advance as it tends to sell out quickly!

Best Restaurants in Hilton Head
Skull Creek Dockside
If you’re only going to eat at one waterfront restaurant during your visit, make it Skull Creek Dockside.
Located directly on the water, this restaurant offers incredible views, especially around sunset. The outdoor seating area creates a relaxed coastal atmosphere, making it a great spot for families, couples, and groups.
The menu features seafood favorites, burgers, sandwiches, and Southern-inspired dishes. Even if you’re not hungry, it’s worth visiting for the scenery alone.
Why Visit:
- Waterfront dining (their seafood alfredo was so good)
- Great sunset views
- Casual atmosphere
- Family-friendly
- Extensive menu options
The seafood alfredo was one of my favorite meals on the island. The portion was generous, packed with seafood, and exactly what I wanted after a day at the beach. The cocktails are also so refreshing, and the hushpuppies are serviced with a maple butter that I still think about.

Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks
Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks was our first restaurant and it didn’t disappoint. You can order drinks while you wait for your table.
What we ordered:
- Hushpuppies
- Fish & chips (upgraded to the Flounder)
- The catch of the day
- Blackened Grouper
The blackened grouper was the standout of the meal. Fresh seafood is clearly the focus here, and the waterfront setting makes the experience even better.
Michael Anthony’s Cucina Italiana
For a special dinner, Michael Anthony’s Cucina Italiana was easily one of the best meals of the trip.
The restaurant delivers an authentic Italian dining experience with handmade pasta, expertly prepared entrees, and exceptional service. The atmosphere feels upscale without being overly formal, making it ideal for date nights or celebrations.
They also have the Market, where you can buy to-go items to cook in your place if you want a night in.
If you’re looking for something beyond seafood during your Hilton Head vacation, this is a must-visit restaurant.
Why Visit:
- Authentic Italian cuisine
- Excellent service
- Great date-night restaurant
- Handmade pasta dishes

Hilton Head Ice Cream
No vacation is complete without ice cream, and Hilton Head Ice Cream was the perfect place to satisfy a sweet tooth after dinner.
With a wide selection of flavors and generous portions, it’s an easy stop for families and anyone looking for a cool treat after a day at the beach. As a family we tried: cookie monster, strawberry, mint chip, and chocolate. We went back another day because it really is that good.
Why Visit:
- Local favorite
- Large flavor selection
- Great for families
- Perfect post-dinner dessert
The flavors we ordered:
- Mint chip (my absolute favorite)
- Cookie Monster
- Strawberry
- Chocolate

Coffee Shops
- Barnacle Brews is the only coffee shop visited more than once
- Origin Coffee Bar – it’s highly rated and it’s cute inside, but I’d give it 3 out of 5.
- Hilton Head Coffee Roasters – I came across this coffee shop on my last day and if I had known about it sooner, it would’ve been my go to shop all week. The honey latte was perfect!
Helpful Hilton Head Travel Tips
Best Time to Visit Hilton Head
Spring and fall are often considered the best times to visit Hilton Head. The weather is warm, crowds are smaller, and outdoor activities are comfortable.
Summer is popular for beach vacations but tends to be busier and hotter. We went at the beginning of June and the weather was perfect and the crowds weren’t present yet.
Where to Stay
There are beautiful pockets around the island to stay in. Sea Pines is ideal for first-time visitors thanks to its proximity to Harbour Town and beach access. Families often enjoy Palmetto Dunes for its resorts and amenities, while South Forest Beach offers easy access to restaurants and shopping. I personally stay near Folly Field Beach and love the quiet, less crowded atmosphere that it brings.
Places I’d recommend:
- Budget: Waterside by Spinnaker Resorts – Budget friendly but still walkable to the beach!
- Mid-range: Hilton Beachfront Resort & Spa Hilton Head Island – Situated in Palmetto Dunes and perfect for families or those wanting to be around plenty to do.
- Splurge: The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa – Walking distance to the beach, this location is the best you can get in Hilton Head Island.
Getting Around the Island
While a car is useful for arriving on the island, bikes are one of the most enjoyable ways to get around once you’re there. The island’s extensive bike trail system makes exploring easy and convenient.
We had access to a car which is more my speed (I am not the best bike rider!)
